Meyer Sound attackes the Cinema

Buddy of mine had a long meeting with the Meyer Sound rep today. Seems that John Meyer has been working hard on cinema sound for the past 3 years and is ready to go.

The little video with John Meyer is worth watching.

Since a lot of you are cinema sound fans and Altec is the greatest name in the biz, I thought you might like to see what is up and coming. My buddy said:

"...John has spent the last 3 years developing this system there are 3 being installed in FL as we speak Pixar and Skywalker are mixing their movies on this system
John is guaranteeing them the experience will be the same in the theater
they come straight out of the 5.1 outputs into a Meyer Galileo processor which is not a decoder just a signal processor, time align ,eq and such it seems John has a great passion to help save the theater experience "

Would be interesting to hear. I worked with Meyer PA gear for years and like it.

Is the current trend to make everything powered now? If true, what's the purpose?

The obvious advantage...building the power amp in the box gives the designer control over what amp his speaker is used with. It takes one more area of concern out of the picture.

Eventually processor amp and speaker will all be modules you just stack up and wire.

There are already speakers with processing built in...they will likely be the dominant design.

Did'nt I see that guy on a "Mythbusters" episode once........the: "Brown-note" experiment? Running a HUGE bank of woofers trying to get a guy to.....well....you had to have seen it.

Yes you did! Good memory. Meyer is in Berkeley, so Myth Busters is close. I used to have a roommate who worked next door, so I would go hang out at Meyer Sound and watch them build stuff. Early 90s.

Powered is very popular in P.A. these days. I bought the Meyer powered stuff when it first hit the market in 96, I think it was. Saw it at INFOCOM that year, it was new. Took me a lot of talking to convince other sound guys to go with active speakers. Now they all love it.

Meyer should do a good job with the cinema stuff.
